Characterization of enterocins produced by Enterococcus mundtii isolated from humans feces BABT
Ferreira,Alessandra Einsfeld; Canal,Natália; Morales,Daiana; Fuentefria,Daiane Bopp; Corção,Gertrudes.
The aim of this study was to characterize bacteriocins produced by 70 strains of Enterococcus mundtii.Four strains exhibited antibiotic activity towards Listeria innocua, L. monocytogenes, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Salmonella Enteritidis. They remained active under temperatures of up to 121ºC for 20 min, and under pH treatments that varied from 2.0 to 10.0. Antimicrobial activity was maintained during the storage test for 60 days under freezing. The kinetics of production revealed the peak activity of 1600 AU /mL during the logarithmic growth phase and the molecular weight found was approximately 3.0 kDa. The characterization of the products with antimicrobial activity indicated their proteic nature, presenting a typical kinetics of primary metabolite...

Characterization of the variable region in the class 1 integron of antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli isolated from surface water BJM
Canal,Natália; Meneghetti,Karine Lena; Almeida,Clara Ponzi de; Bastos,Marina da Rosa; Otton,Letícia Muner; Corção,Gertrudes.
Abstract Fecal bacteria are considered to be a potential reservoir of antimicrobial resistance genes in the aquatic environment and could horizontally transfer these genes to autochthonous bacteria when carried on transferable and/or mobile genetic elements. Such circulation of resistance genes constitutes a latent public health hazard. The aim of this study was to characterize the variable region of the class 1 integron and relate its genetic content to resistance patterns observed in antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli isolated from the surface waters of Patos Lagoon, Southern Brazil. Genetic diversity of the isolates and presence of the qacEΔ1 gene, which confers resistance to quaternary ammonium compounds, were also investigated. A total of 27...

First occurrence of blaOXA-58 in Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from a clinical sample in Southern Brazil BJM
Gusatti,Carolina de Souza; Bertholdo,Lauren Martins; Otton,Letícia Muner; Marchetti,Desirée Padilha; Ferreira,Alessandra Einsfeld; Corção,Gertrudes.
This is the first report of an Acinetobacter baumannii from clinical origin carrying the blaOXA-58 gene in Brazil. The isolate included in this study was from a patient during an outbreak in Porto Alegre, RS, Southern Brazil, in 2007. It was resistant to most of the beta-lactams tested, it has also the blaOXA-65 gene and the ISAba1 sequence located upstream to both blaOXA genes detected and it has a MIC of imipenem of 64 μg/mL.

Mannanoligosaccharide agglutination by Salmonella enterica strains isolated from carrier pigs BJM
Borowsky,Luciane; Corção,Gertrudes; Cardoso,Marisa.
Type-1 fimbriae are associated with most Salmonella enterica serovars and are an essential factor for host colonization. Mannanoligosaccharides (MOS), a prebiotic that is agglutinated by type-1 fimbriae, are proposed for the control of enterobacteria colonization and may be an alternative to Salmonella control in pigs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capability of porcine Salmonella strains to adhere to MOS in vitro. A total of 108 strains of Salmonella sp. isolated from carrier pigs were evaluated for the amplification of fimA and fimH genes, agglutination of MOS and hemagglutination. In all tested strains, amplicons of expected size were detected for both fimA and fimH gene. In the hemagglutination assays, 31 (28.7%) strains presented...

Microbiological quality of minimally processed vegetables sold in Porto Alegre, Brazil BJM
Silva,Silvia R. Pavan da; Verdin,Sylvia E. Frizzo; Pereira,Dariane C.; Schatkoski,Aline M.; Rott,Marilise B.; Corção,Gertrudes.
Minimally processed vegetables go through various steps during their preparation, with many modifications to their natural structure. However, they must maintain the same quality as the fresh produce. The aim of the present study was to quantify mesophilic and psychrotrophic microorganisms and total and faecal coliforms, and to assess the presence of Escherichia coli, parasites, and dirt material in ready-to-eat minimally processed vegetables. Fifty-six samples of minimally processed vegetables were analysed for the presence of mesophilic and psychrotrophic microorganisms by the plate-count method. Monthly means ranged from 4.7x10(5) to 1.6x10(8) CFU/g and from 7.9x10(6) to 2.7x10(8) CFU/g, respectively for mesophilic and psychrotrophic microorganisms....

Microbiota ileal de frangos de corte submetidos a diferentes dietas R. Bras. Zootec.

Spread of Metallo-β-lactamases: screening reveals the presence of a BLA SPM-1 gene in hospital sewage in southern Brazil BJM
Fuentefria,Daiane Bopp; Ferreira,Alessandra Einsfeld; Gräf,Tiago; Corção,Gertrudes.
Of 396 Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated from hospital sewage, the blaSPM-1 gene was confirmed in nine. This is the first report of environmental P. aeruginosa strains carrying the blaSPM-1 gene in Brazil. The carbapenem resistance, already disseminated among clinical isolates, has been detected among environmental isolates.
